Scarlino

Scarlino

13 km

Scarlino is a small town in the Maremma region of Grosseto, located inland about 15 km from the Gulf of Follonica. The medieval village stands on a hill surrounded by gullies, hillocks and valleys covered with Mediterranean scrub. Scarlino's origins date back to Etruscan times, as evidenced by the remains of the baths and theater.

The historic core is dominated by the Rocca di Scarlino, a 13th-century fortress that belonged to the Aldobrandeschi family, from the top of which there is a beautiful view of the Gulf of Follonica, the Colline Metallifere and the Tuscan Archipelago. Inside the walls are the Town Hall and the Church of Saints Jacopo and Leonardo, dating from the 15th century.

Today Scarlino's economy is based on agriculture, particularly viticulture: fine wines such as Morellino di Scansano and Aleatico dell'Elba have their production area here. The natural landscape and historical-archaeological wealth make Scarlino an attractive destination for rural and hiking tourism.
